Amanda, there are so many layers of truth in what you’ve written.
I can picture scenarios I have lived with led to the issues you point out. As a child, I saw such in families, even in mine. It’s almost an unconscious subtle destruction of the trust fabric that every family unit starts with.
From ‘little secrets’ being told to the whole family at the wrong time, to not realizing how one embarrassing conversation could lead to a child never opening up again.
I feel that the more I spend time with technology now, the more I appreciate the off-line connections I build with the people I meet online.
Therapy, if anything, has shown me how the past led me here and what can be done to undo.
I look forward to learning more about this and expressing the Cameroonian context in a way that more people will identify past mishaps and build better, stronger bonds with their families.
Who knows…we might never need strangers to be therapists once we realize how each of us could be each other’s keeper ( and therapist).
