Expect Nothing

Thoughts on Becoming a Reliable Member of the Community

Don’t expect anything from anyone.

You have hope, aspirations, dreams, desires, wishes.

You have family and friends who show up. You have people who stand up for you — people you can count on.

But don’t expect anything: we’re not entitled to anything.

Anything we get is a plus. Anything we get is a gift: time, opportunity, money, forgiveness, permission, etc.

I can’t control the world around me by wishing things were different. By hoping you’d understand what I meant when my words affected you negatively. Praying you’ll forgive me as soon as I say “I’m sorry”.

It’s my fault. It’s always my fault if I’m misunderstood. It’s my fault if I don’t account for the government in which I implement my ideas. Or this body I live in.

Expecting things to be more comfortable/lenient/smooth is never a good idea.

Of course, sometimes I feel like someone else is responsible for something wrong that happened. I catch myself blaming others when you and I know the truth — I didn’t do my part.

Of course, I get mad at weird policies, office wahala, and personal issues people have with me. I complain about the laws and weather, and systems.

I try to remember that none of these will help me make the art I want to see in the world.

You can’t read minds, neither can I. The people around us can’t read our minds. The only place we can control is our minds; how we take the world around us and leverage it to achieve our chosen version of success.

Complaining about an issue has never solved it. Actions solve the problems. Not wishes. Not angst.

What actions can you take today to get you closer to your goals?

If you’re reading this, you still go a shot. Now you know that you’re a walking miracle, a blessing to others. You know you’re capable of dealing with whatever comes your way, ready to embark on a journey of growth and love.

The world will hit you, shove you aside, drown you in stories that will cause your resolve to waver. But you will stand.

You will fall, and still, stand. You will rise again through yet another beautiful day and take another chance at the road.

In the end, you will become strong enough for everyone around you to know they can count on you.

Expecting nothing doesn’t mean you will lower your standards or refuse help. It means you will appreciate every single addition to your life: from the doorman to the polite clerk, the quick chat through the shop, to the rising sun.

Because you expect nothing, everything is a gift.
