Thank you for writing this, Aisha. It’s been a year since I moved to the US and there’s so much I’ve been trying to learn. This information is very crucial to me. I work with an organization that leverages mental health resources for churches and their communities.
Before I got here(US), I all I had as mental health help in Cameroon was…well…nothing.
The conversation around mental health is changing. I can’t believe it’s over a decade since this amazing woman made such strides yet, the data hasn’t moved the needle much.
Some would say 1 is greater than 0 — and I agree. But to think that America still has such sad numbers for minority mental health professionals…
I don’t even want to think of the 31% you mentioned.
A lot has to be done. It’s hard for me to not think of how Cameroonians and many people in African countries are yet to make this conversation an acceptable one.
The needle is moving. I guess all we can do is keep pushing.
